Predicting Double Replacement Reactions

Step by step-

1. Write names of products by switching last names

2. Check solubility on table F.

       soluble --> (aq)

        insoluble--> (s)= precipitate = means a reaction occurs

      2 soluble products = no reaction=STOP

****The Soluble 5 Exception

Hydrogen carbonate      H2CO3(aq) -->  H2O(l) + CO2 (g)

Hydrogen sulfite             H2SO3(aq) -->  H2O(l) + SO2(g)

Ammonium hydroxide   NH4OH(aq) --> H2O(l) + NH3(g)

Hydrogen Sulfide            H2S(g)

Hydrogen Hydroxide     HOH......H2O(l)

1. Write names of products by switching last names

2. Check solubility

A. silver nitrate (aq)+ potassium chromate(aq) è potassium nitrate(aq) + silver chromate(S)

B. sodium sulfate(aq) + barium chloride(aq)è barium sulfate(s) + sodium chloride(aq)

C. lithium hydroxide(aq) + sodium chromate(aq)è sodium hydroxide(aq) + lithium chromate(aq)

Both Products are (aq),  No Reaction

D. acetic acid(aq) + cesium hydroxide(aq) è cesium acid + acetic hydroxide

NO ACIDS NAMES ALLOWED-Change it

hydrogen acetate(aq) + cesium hydroxide(aq) è hydrogen hydroxide + cesium acetate(aq)

Hydrogen Hydroxide is an exception-Change it èwater(l)  + cesium acetate(aq)

E. ammonium chloride(aq) + sodium hydroxide(aq)è ammonium hydroxide(aq) + sodium chloride(aq)

Ammonium Hydroxide is an exception-Change it to water and ammonia

ammonium chloride(aq) + sodium hydroxide(aq)è water(l) +  ammonia(g)   + sodium chloride(aq)
